The story behind Plant My Place

Plant My Place was birthed from two passions. Indoor plant obsession and design.

In life before kids, Annie, Plant My Place owner and plant stylist, worked in advertising as a desktop publisher and graphic artist. Her art college course straight out of school also covered visual merchandising and displays, and although she loved it while studying she pursued the graphic art route until her children came about.

Returning to work after kids, Annie worked in a string of industries, mostly in various administration roles. She also studied a health sciences degree. After a number of years, she turned to plants as a hobby in her spare time, both an escape from the mundane life she found office work to be but also a way of aiding bouts of mental health. Propagating, nurturing, re-potting, reviving – Annie was hooked and gradually her house went from only having a handful of plants to a living urban jungle in just a few short years.

Annie remembers fond memories as a young girl spending time in her grandfather’s greenhouse, where her Pop raised lots of plant babies, even weaving many of his own baskets and pots. Her mum also had lots of plants and when she passed away, Annie adopted a number of them. Annie’s dad also has a bit of an ‘accidental’ green thumb. He swears he does nothing special, ‘just cut that bit off there and stick it in the pot, it will grow’! He has some rare varieties that he’s not even aware are rare and he calls all his plants petunias because he has not a single idea what type of plant they are.

After years of working in many office settings, Annie realised she needed out and get back to being creative again. She began doing displays at a local nursery, where rarely a display went unsold, and the realisation that there was a need for someone who has the knowledge of plants, along with a creative eye to make them work in a particular space, was real and Plant My Place was born.

Annie loves to share her knowledge and wants to bring your favourite space to life with plants.
